Kids Guest Bedroom Reveal

I was adding the finishing touches to this room the day my 2 little grand daughters were arriving.
( Nothing like cutting it close!)

So, here it is!

I love the new updated look!

Kids Room Makeover

With my little grandson back home with his family, I had a small window of opportunity to redo the kids guest room before our son and his family came to visit for a week.

This room doubles as my craft/sewing room as well, so the closet was overflowing with all of my supplies. I wanted some kind of built in shelf, cabinet and desk combo on one wall to give me more storage space, and to free up the closet.

We had been searching everywhere for just the right cabinets for this space. We were running out of time when, finally, we found the perfect cabinets at Lowes.

Now that the issue with the built- ins was solved, we were ready to begin:

This is how the room looked before the makeover.

This is the wall that we put the built-ins on.
( this picture is a little distorted because I used the panoramic option on my phone)

I wanted to paint the walls gray because it is the “in” color and also because we had a gallon left over from my laundry area makeover.

Before I begin any painting project, I spend a lot of time prepping and taping.

I pulled all of the nails out of the walls and filled them with drywall mud.

20130624-080449.jpg

I taped around all of the trim boards and ceiling.

20130624-080616.jpg

20130624-080637.jpg

I even remove all of the switch plate covers and tape over the outlets and switches

20130624-080747.jpg

I had painted a border around the window in this room and I wanted to keep it so, I taped it off as well.

20130624-081058.jpg

20130624-081120.jpg
(This room gets so much light from the big windows that it is hard to get a good picture, even with the shutters closed.)

The walls in my house are not smooth, they have what is called an orange peel texture on them. As much as I love the texture, it makes it very difficult to keep the paint from seeping under the tape. After doing my research, I found out that once the first layer of paint is on, it will seal the tape and no more paint will seep in.

So, for the black stripe around the window, I used some water based polycrylic protective finish to seal the tape
.

20130624-081458.jpg

For the tape on the ceiling, I used white ceiling paint because if it seeps through, it will be white.

20130624-081557.jpg

This method worked great. I had a few spots that needed touching up, but for the most part, it was perfect.

After all of the painting was done, it was time to install the cabinets and paint the furniture.

Stay tuned for the big reveal!

Finally, The Day Has Arrived!

Finally, only one more week until it is time to go home.

BUT, not before we hit Legoland!

I had been there last summer with my 2 grandsons from Illinois.
You can check out that post here.

They are much older and most of the rides are geared towards the younger kids. The boys did ride the roller coasters and they loved mini USA. It was in July, so we spent most of our time at the water park.

This time I got to see Legoland through the eyes of a 5 year old, which was a totally different experience.

I knew that all of the employees wore mini figures on their badges and would trade with you if you brought some. I also knew that you would receive a drivers license when you went to the driving school so I wanted Connor to be prepared.
I took an old lanyard that the Capt. had gotten from a conference and turned it into one that would hold some mini figs plus display a drivers license.

Now we are ready, here we go!

Here he is, wearing his Lego T shirt, Lego Crocs and his lanyard with 2 mini figures attached.

The kids are always amazed and really excited when they see this welcome sign made of Legos.

We rode all of the rides, except for the roller coasters

The driving school was really fun because he actually got to drive himself.

20130618-074912.jpg
We lost one of our mini figures some where but we earned our drivers license.

I think the interactive things are what he liked the most.

20130618-075052.jpg
As much as he liked the mini USA, it was for much different reasons than the older boys. He liked to push the buttons and watch the moving parts.

20130618-075154.jpg
He also searched each city for a fire department.

20130618-075248.jpg

20130618-075311.jpg
He loved this area where you gather up balls to shoot out of a cannon.

I had to talk him into watching the ski show, but once it started, he really liked it

I was glad to see that they brought back the pyramid! ( This park was originally Cypress Gardens, famous for their ski shows and inventor of the ski pyramid).

I think his very favorite part of the whole experience was trading mini figures. He would trade with everyone that he saw!

Our last stop, The Big Store!

20130618-103753.jpg

We stopped at our favorite ice cream shop on the way home and talked about our special day and how fun it was while eating an ice cream cone!

I think I will be bringing more grandkids in the future but it will still be a new experience for me.

The next visit to Legoland will be with little girls!

Still Passing The Time Until We Go To Legoland

A Very Busy Spring

Hi all!

I had a very busy spring, and now that things have slowed down a little, I would like to share it with you.

It began the end of March when we had our 5 year old grandson stay with us for 6 weeks. His father was away at special schooling for the military and his mother works nights. He has 2 older siblings that are in school and were able to stay at a friends house the 2 nights each week that their mother was working, but it wasn’t as easy to find someone willing to take a 5 year old 2 nights a week for that long so we decided to fly up and get him.

Thanks to modern technology, we were able to stay in touch with both Mom and Dad via FaceTime. That really helped when he was missing his family.

This little guy is a Lego fanatic! He eats, sleeps and breaths Legos and it just so happens that we live in the same town as Legoland. I planned to take him there but I purposely waited until his last week here so that he would have something to look forward to.

To help pass the time, I highlighted the special day on the calendar and then each morning, we would cross off a day and count how many days left until we get to go to Legoland.

In the meantime, we kept busy playing with Legos!

20130611-164629.jpg
We put together the kits that his parents sent with him.

20130611-164714.jpg
We played with the large bin of Legos that the Capt.’s boss lent us.

We also celebrated Easter!
