Glittered Shoes

Glittered shoes are everywhere!

They are in all of the stores and you see all of the stars wearing them.

So many crafty ladies have posted tutorials on how to make your own glittered shoes so I just had to get in on all of the fun.

As you know, we are going on a family cruise in January and I thought that some glittered shoes would be a fun addition to my cruise wear wardrobe.

I found these two pairs of shoes at the Goodwill and I thought they would be perfect for this project.

20120629-071505.jpg

You may remember the red pair, they were a little too tight so I had to stretch them out a bit. You can read about it here.

For this project, you will need:

Modpodge
Fine glitter
Acrylic paint, the color of the glitter
Paintbrush
Painters tape

The first thing that I did was to clean the shoes real well and then tape the sole and heal with some painters tape.

20120629-071729.jpg

Then I mixed some green and blue acrylic paint and painted the shoes.

20120629-071828.jpg

I did this extra step so that I didn’t have to apply as many coats of the glitter paint.

I didn’t take a picture of each step because I was so excited to start this project that I forgot to it is pretty self explanatory and easy to figure out.

I mixed about 3-4 teaspoons of Modpodge with the fine glitter. You are basically making glitter paint so you want it to be the consistency of paint. If you make it too thick, the glitter will leave big clumps and you don’t want that.

Just paint it all over the shoes and let it dry.
I did two coats of the glitter paint and then just filled in any spots that may have needed a little extra.

Here is the finished product, I just love how they turned out!

20120629-074032.jpg

For the next pair, I did not paint the shoes first. I mixed several different colors of glitter together and applied two coats.

When it was dry, I then applied the silver glitter to the strap on the top and the heal. Because I did not paint it first, it took lots of coats of the glitter paint.

I am really happy with the finished look.

20120629-074139.jpg

I did get a little carried away with the glitter paint!

20120629-074221.jpg

But I just love these shoes and I wear them everywhere.

20120629-074301.jpg

My next project is going to be finding a place to put all of my new shoes.

I Wonder Why The Power Is Out

We lost our power Sunday night due to tropical storm Debby. Usually when we lose power, it is for a few hours at best. Well, it just so happens that we were in the middle of watching a movie so the Capt. fired up the generator and we lost ourselves in the movie, oblivious to everything going on around us.

We didn’t get power back until about 7am the next morning.

What caused us to be without power all night.

Hmmm, I wonder?

20120627-083930.jpg

20120627-083943.jpg

This tornado came less than 1/4 of a mile from my house and we had no clue.

I guess what they say is true:

Ignorance is bliss!

Tropical Storm Debby Can’t Ruin Our Fun

When you come to Florida during hurricane season you have to make sure that you have a ” plan B”.

It has been raining ever since our son and his family got here.

But, we are not letting tropical storm Debby ruin our fun.

We went to an indoor flea market and fed the alligators.

20120625-074817.jpg

20120625-074838.jpg

20120625-074855.jpg

And got in the bouncy house

20120625-074938.jpg

20120625-075000.jpg

Nothing like a rainy day to inspire young bakers.

20120625-075106.jpg

20120625-075128.jpg

We changed from beach day to craft day.

20120625-075209.jpg

We still need to get rid of all of this energy.
There is no thunder or lightening so swimming in the rain was a great idea.

20120625-075316.jpg

20120625-075333.jpg

We have been without power here in central Florida since last night but that is OK, it will be movie day today. We may have to drive to another city with power but we will have fun!

Thank God for generators.

Change Of Plans

I went to the Orlando International Airport this morning to pick up my son and his family.

I specifically got their early so that I could people watch.
I had already decided that my post today was going to consist of pictures of some of the colorful people that you see walking through the airport. I scouted out the perfect seat that had a clear view of everyone coming and going and I just knew that I would have lots of material for my blog.

Oh yes, here comes my first subject now, a kid with a bright orange mohawk. I got my iPhone out to take the picture but I quickly realized that I couldn’t discreetly get a good picture. I tried to be sly but even then, the flash would give me away. I chickened out.

I was able to catch one guy off guard.

20120622-140522.jpg

Just kidding! This is a wax figure in a glass case. He looks real though doesn’t he?

20120622-140624.jpg

OK, change of plans Since I couldn’t get any “colorful” pictures, I decided to go for cute.

These are my 2 grand daughters that will be visiting for the whole week.

20120622-140719.jpg

I hope everyone has a good weekend, I know I will!

Giving Back

Welcome to series #6, the last of the series, Giving Back

We all want what’s best for our kids. We teach them about the important things in life such as doing good in school, how to be law abiding citizens, how to save for the future and about God’s mercy and grace, but one very important thing often gets overlooked. We need to teach our children the importance of helping others!

20120620-084528.jpg

We need to be teaching our kids how to give back.

We are living in a society today, where it is ” all about me”.

The attitude is ” I am the only one in the world”, and this breeds negative thoughts and actions.

We need to make our kids realize how lucky they are to have the things that they do and to make them aware of the fact that there are so many less fortunate people out there that need our help.

As a family, we could be helping others by volunteering at a soup kitchen, visiting nursing homes, adopting a needy family or maybe even raising money for a certain charity.

By helping others, we are giving them the things that they need while finding meaning in our own lives.

When you are serving others, you receive fulfillment and blessings that money can not buy.

The Bible tells us to give and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.” Luke 6:38.

We are instructed to be generous and give willingly. Proverbs 28:27 tells us that he who gives to the poor will lack nothing, but he who closes his eyes to them receives many curses.

We also need to make sure that our motives are for the right reasons. We are to be sincere in our actions and not just seeking recognition.

Matthew 6:1-2 tell us to be careful not to do your ‘acts of righteousness’ before men, to be seen by them. If you do, you will have no reward from your Father in heaven. So when you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do in the synagogues and on the streets, to be honored by men. I tell you the truth, they have received their reward in full.

We need to bring back the attitude of ” it is better to give than to receive”.

The great thing is, when we give of ourselves, we find the peace and joy and fulfillment that enriches our own lives!

Vinyl Decals

I am soooo envious of those ladies with the vinyl cutting machines.

But, after doing a lot of research and arguing with myself, I decided that I was too cheap not going to use it enough to make it worth buying one for myself.

That doesn’t mean that I have to deprive myself of all things vinyl though!

Thanks to Etsy and some very crafty people, you can order just about anything you can imagine, so here is what I did:

Our son and his family are coming for a visit so I am getting the house ready for guests.

I thought it would be fun to add a little element of surprise in some unusual places.

The first place is the guest bathroom.

Here is a picture of what you see when you walk into the bathroom ( not so good I know, the lighting was horrible).

20120618-070337.jpg

And this is what you see when you pull back the shower curtain to shower or bathe.

20120618-070509.jpg

Well, thanks to Keri at Creative Corner Designs, this is what they will see when they pull back the shower curtain from now on.

20120618-070902.jpg

20120618-070942.jpg

I also added some cute little surprises in the guest rooms.

I got some help from Creative Outlets. I can’t wait for the first time they want to plug in a charger and are greeted with these adorable little faces.

20120618-071307.jpg

Get naked decal and shipping $7.00
Outlet decals and shipping $4.95

Total. $11.95

Now that’s the biggest “element of surprise “of all!

June’s Pins

Last month when I was going through my pins, I posted some of my favorites.

I decided then, that I would make it a point to go through my boards once a month and share some of them to help get inspired.

So, here are my favorites for June:

I am definitely going to try this when my granddaughters are here.

Don’t Smother

Welcome to series #5 Don’t Smother

One of the hardest things a parent will ever do, is to let go. What I mean by that is ” don’t smother!”

We need to prepare our kids to leave the nest.

20120613-083120.jpg

I think parents lose more sleep during the teenage years than they ever did when their child was an infant.

We wonder if we did the right thing by letting them go to the mall with their friends or drive a car for the first time by themselves.

With all of the crime and violence in the news today, we tend to want to keep our kids home, under our watchful eye, to know that they are safe.

As our kids become teens, they start wanting their independence and we must give it to them.

The overprotective parent may have the peace of mind knowing that their child is safe and secure with them, but what they don’t realize is that they are harming their kids.

If a child is never allowed to apply what you have instilled in them from early on, then they won’t know how to react on their own in difficult situations.

We have to trust that we have given our kids all of the tools that they need to survive in this cruel world and then let them use those tools for themselves.

The parents that smother end up robbing their kids of self confidence. They are basically telling their teen that they don’t trust them to make the right decisions. We need to let them face challenges on their own without any interference from us. The more our kids are able to do on their own, the better their self esteem will be.

Sometimes it is difficult to distinguish between being overprotective and guiding your child. I think that it is good to let them have room to make their own mistakes but be their to help them when they need it.

We need to put our trust in God that he will give us strength to let go as he puts a hedge of protection around our child.

The Bible says that we are to teach our kids without frustrating them:

Colossians 3:21 Fathers, do not exasperate your children, that they may not lose heart.

We are to teach them and then trust that they will make the right choices:

Proverbs 1:8-9 Listen, my son, to your father’s instruction and do not forsake your mother’s teaching. They will be a garland to grace your head and a chain to adorn your neck.

Proverbs 22:6 Train a child in the way he should go,
and when he is old he will not turn from it.

We are to put our faith in God, that he will protect us and our children:

Psalms 121:7 The LORD will keep you from all harm– he will watch over your life.

Genesis 28:15 I am with you and will watch over you wherever you go, and I will bring you back to this land. I will not leave you until I have done what I have promised you.”

I love this quote by Lady Bird Johnson, former U.S. first lady:

“Children are likely to live up to what you believe of them.”

Monogramed Soap Dispensers

Good morning all, I hope everyone had a great weekend!

This morning I want to share an easy DIY project with you.

I am so into monograms right now, I just love how they look, on anything and everything.

I am having more company coming at the end of the month so I wanted to add some personal touches before they arrive.

I saw these cute hand santizers on Pinterest and decided that I wanted to do that for my soap dispensers. I removed the labels a while ago, but they are just too plain looking for me.

20120611-072908.jpg

Amy from the Idea Room gives you instructions and a free monogram download here

I was in a hurry, and did not read all of her instructions ( like I should have). I was just so excited at the prospect of the cute little bottles that I grabbed these clear window decals that I already had and printed out a whole page full of P’s, even though I only needed three.

20120611-073154.jpg

20120611-073331.jpg

I cut them out, stuck them onto the front of the soap dispensers and stood back to admire how cute they looked (patting myself on the back).

20120611-073536.jpg

20120611-073620.jpg

My excitement was short lived because as soon as the Capt. grabbed the cute little soap dispenser with his wet hands, all of the ink smudged ( and his hands looked worse than when he started) and he gave me the hairy eyeball stare.

20120611-073815.jpg

I was not about to give up just yet. I had 3 extra P’s that I had printed out because I was too cheap thrifty to not want to waste the other half of the decal sheet. These decals have a sticky back, so I took a new sheet ( I ended up wasting using way more sheets than I had expected) and placed it over the printed monograms. I cut them out and pressed them good to remove all of the air bubbles. I applied the new and improved monograms to my soap dispensers and I am very pleased with the way that they turned out.

20120611-074044.jpg

20120611-074127.jpg

Check them out!

Sunday Social

Hi everyone,

Surprised to see me on Sunday?

I am hooking up with Neely and Ashly for their new “Sunday Social” link-up!

This is a great way to meet new bloggers and learn more about me.

20120610-194813.jpg

Here are this weeks questions:

How did you come up with your blog name?

I wanted a glorified way to say that I am a thrifty housewife who loves to make things.

What is your favorite thing about blogging?

I am new to blogging so I get super excited when other bloggers leave me comments and better yet, become a follower.

What is one thing you have discovered because of blogging and now cant live without?

It is 2 things for me, Starbucks bottles and monograms. I had no idea that there were so many ways to use them and I fear I am becoming obsessed. I even combined my 2 loves and I will be posting them very soon!

Facebook or Twitter? and why?

Facebook. I don’t know anything about Twitter and I really don’t have the desire to learn. Blogging, Facebook and Pinterest already fill up my day.

If one celeb read your blog who would you want it to be?

John Travolta. I think he is a fantastic actor, a wonderful person and I just know that we would become good friends and then I would have a chance to tell him about Jesus!

What is something you want people to know about your blog?

It is a work in progress. As my knowledge of blogging grows, I hope that my blog will too.

This is going to be a weekly social so come join the fun!

Romans 12:10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.
